Captain’s December 2020 Update
Events this month
16 December Nine holes, four clubs and a putter competition – Entry fees will be £2 to pay for prizes. We will have reserved tee times so please let me know if you would like to play by Friday 11 December. To get in the Christmas mood it would be great if players could prepare a Secret Santa gift to the value of £5 that we can distribute on the morning (homemade, humorous or pamper gifts will be most welcome). It would be great (weather permitting) if we can go to Peachcroft Farm for coffee after the match (they have outdoor heating!).
All I want for Christmas is a Vaccine and a better year for golf in 2021!!
Stay safe and well Love Jenni
Captain’s November Update
Welcome to my November update. We’ve had a busy few weeks but sadly we’ve got to take a forced break until December 2nd, which is very disappointing – but we hope the Green keepers keep working and the course will be in pristine condition when we return. Also by the time we return the new handicap system should have been sorted.
7 October Stableford was won by Tess with 31 points with Margaret and Carole coming in second and third with 30 points. The competition was followed by a lovely lunch at the Greyhound pub.
27/28 October the Battle of the Sexes saw eleven ladies take on a team of Senior men. Unfortunately due to the atrocious weather not all of the games were completed but the following results were recorded, which Liz (as Competition Secretary) declared as an honourable draw.
Jenni and Mike – LADIES WON (9 holes)
Liz, Sandra, Edward and Laurence – MATCH DRAWN (17 holes)
Julia, Julie, Colin and Graham – MEN WON (16 holes)
Tess, Carol, Peter and Ed – MEN WON (12 holes)
Margaret, Chris, Paul and David – MEN WON (13 holes)
Alison, Val, Robert and Mick – LADIES WON (12 holes)
Well done to everyone who played. It has been agreed that we will do this again in the New Year, when hopefully there will be no Autumn storms to cope with.
4 November Stableford was won by me with 30 points (I am still in shock that this happened), with Val and Julie in second and third place with 29 points.
23 November AGM – Do not forget the deadline for putting forward agenda items for the virtual AGM ia Monday 9 November. This is your chance to have your say about any matters of concern.
2 December Nine holes, four clubs and a putter competition – With the end of the current lockdown this will be a great opportunity to get back into the swing of things. Entry fees will be £2 to pay for prizes. We will have reserved tee times so please let me know if you would like to play by Friday 27 November. To get in the Christmas mood it would be great if players could prepare a Secret Santa gift to the value of £5 that we can distribute on the morning (homemade, humorous or pamper gifts will be most welcome). It would be great (weather permitting) if we can go to Peachcroft Farm for coffee after the match.
2021 Ladies Calender – Please see below the provisional calendar for next year. This will help you plan your 2021 holidays, making sure you do not miss any competitions and matches!!
Stay active and sane!!
Ladies Captain’s October Update
Welcome to my October update, it has been great to see more ladies turning up to play on Wednesday mornings, maintaining the traditional Ladies’ Wednesday morning roll up and making sure that we don’t always play with the same people.
During September we had a great Away Day at Wrag Barn with eleven ladies taking on this lengthy course on what proved to be a very hot day. The winners of the competition were Liz B in first place with Maddie a close 2nd. The day ended with tea and cake to celebrate Sandra’s 80th birthday, highlighting how good golf is for you if we all look as good as Sandra does at such a grand age!!
I have a spare Ladies pullover with the Radley badge on, cost £20, please let me know if you would like it. I thought I had lost mine and have now found it after ordering a new one.
Birthday cake being demolished on a very safe table of six at Wrag Barn after a great day of golf.
7 October Stableford competition – We will have reserved tee times and will book up the Greyhound at Besselsleigh for a post-match lunch. People can play 9 or 18 holes. It will be a good opportunity to get another card logged on the handicap system. So far I have the following people signed up Chris, Julie, Janet, Gill, Julia, Liz B, Maddie, Joy, Sandra, Margaret, Liz E, Ali and myself. If you would like to add your name to the list to play and for lunch please let me know by 2 October.
27/28 October The Ladies V the Senior Men – Ladies are invited to sign up for this 18 hole match play competition. Once I know how many Ladies wish to play and on which day I will ask Edward Bennett (Senior Mens’ Fixtures Secretary) to sign up the same number of men. We will do a draw and the onus will be on the four players to reserve a tee time using Club V1. It would be great if we could get at least 12 ladies to sign up. Deadline for entry will be 7 October. There will not be an entry fee for this event, we are playing to see who will win the battle of the sexes. I hope everyone will agree that it will be good to catch up with the Boys!
4 November – Ladies monthly stableford – Closing date for entries 23 October. Tee times will be reserved for this competition.
We also plan to organise a mixed pairs competition with the Senior Men in November. More details to follow next month.
Captain’s September Update
Welcome to my September update as we head into Autumn and the boys return to the College reducing our access to the course somewhat; but there is no excuse not to book tee times and get out to play. It would be good if we book on Wednesday mornings so we can keep in touch. You can book a Wednesday tee time on a Sunday, ten days in advance, and it would be great if people mixed up the groups playing so we get to play with different people.
We had a letter from the Oxford Children’s Hospital Charities thanking us for our donation from the Captain’s Day, see http://radleygolf.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Donation-to-help-staff-copy.pdf
Congratulations to Val on the arrival of her new grandson Max and to Sandra on her 80th birthday on 16 September.
23 August Peter King Trophy – Well done to Eli Rawle for finishing 5th with 36 points, out of the 31 players who battled the elements on this stormy weekend.
26 August Janet Harper Trophy – thank you to all those who played and joined us for a picnic in Ali’s wonderful garden. We were blessed with a glorious morning weatherwise, see picture below. The winners were:
1st Jenni Collins 69 (my handicap is coming down ladies so hopefully I won’t be seen as a bandit for much longer)
2nd Ali Aldred 79
3rd Carole Hayes 80
15 September Ladies Away Day – Wychwood have cancelled our booking but we have rebooked for Wrag Barn. I have the following names down so far – Joy, Liz E, Liz B, Gill, Julie, Sandra, Julia, Carole, Maddie, Margaret and Chris. 7 October Stableford competition – We will have reserved tee times and plan to book up the Greyhound for a post-match lunch. People can play 9 or 18 holes. It will be a good opportunity to get another card logged on the handicap system. Please let me know if you would like to play and go out for lunch, this will be a chance for us all to celebrate Sandra’s birthday.

Welcome to my August update – where is the time going? Hope everyone is well and getting lots of golf in.

Special thank you to all those who donated prizes and shared lunch. I am pleased to report that we raised £45 that has been sent off to the Oxford Children’s Hospital charity fund. There were some excellent scores on the day, and the winners were as follows:

And we managed to crack the HowDidIDo system to enter our scores – a result for us all!!
26 August Janet Harper Trophy – this will be an 18 hole medal; the maximum score per hole is par +5. If you don’t get over the lake, then you simply put down a score of 8. The entry fee will be £3. We will have reserved tee times.
After the competition we will have a bring and share lunch in Ali Aldred’s garden at 73 Bagley Wood Road, Kennington. Go down St Swithun’s Rd and take second turn up right, signed Bagley Wood Road, odd numbers 63-75. 15 September Wychwood Ladies Away Day – We have four tee times reserved from Midday. The golf will cost £30, buggies are £15 and unfortunately cannot be shared. July Captain’s Update – 17 July 2020
I do hope everyone is well and enjoying getting out to play the course. Thank you to all those who joined in the June Stableford and July Texas Scramble. Well done to all the prize winners.
Please note the following events we have planned:
29 July Lady Captain’s Day – this will be a 18 hole Stableford Competition. We have four tee times blocked out for the morning, this will not count as one of your 5 games in 10 days. This will be a charity event raising funds for the Oxford Childrens’ Hospital. The competition will be followed by a picnic near Abingdon Cricket Ground, where you can park and there is a toilet; this is over the Abingdon Bridge on the road leading to Culham. Entries will close on Friday 24 July, email me email@example.com to enter. The entrance fee will be £3 to be paid on the day. Please let me know if you would like to donate a prize. I will email the draw, timings and regs nearer the day. Everyone is welcome to the picnic, we should get to the cricket ground around 12.30; bring a chair, a drink, a tray bake – savoury or sweet – to share.
26 August Janet Harper Trophy – details will be circulated nearer the time.
15 September Wychwood Ladies Away Day – We have four tee times reserved from Midday. The golf will cost £30, buggies are £15 and unfortunately cannot be shared. Nearer the date the Course will advise if they can provide any hospitality. Please let me know if you would like to join the group by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or send me a whatsapp, 07733328430.
More general news is that the Changing Rooms will be opening soon and the Tee booking system will be in operation when the College reopens; details will be sent to all members soon.
I do operate a Whatsapp group for the Ladies, at the moment there are 17 members. If you would like to be added to the group please let me know.
Finally, I am sad to report that one of our members, Mary Leen, has died during the Lockdown period. We do send condolences to her family. Mary was very keen to play with us last year but had an injury that prevented her playing.
Stay safe and well everyone.
Corona Cup Results 17 June 2020
Thank you to all those who participated in our first competition under the new Lockdown arrangements. After a few glitches getting on to the How Did I Do system we managed to input our scores remotely. Thank you to Liz Evans for getting the results sorted. These competitions give everyone a chance to input their scores and keep their handicaps up to date – my handicap is long overdue a review, hence my victory. Results were as follows:
Non-Qualifying Ladies 9-Hole Stableford 17 Jun 2020
1st Jenni Collins 22points
2nd Julia Smith 16 points
3rd Sandra Eagles 15 points
Prizes will be awarded as soon as I can catch up with Julia and Sandra.
Next Competition – Lockdown Texas Scramble 1 July
We will be holding another competition on 1 July, a three ball, 18 hole, Texas Scramble. To enter please email Jennicollinsayli@gmail.com. We will allocate you to a team and a time, we have 12 reserved tee times from 8.20am, but you can fix another time on the day if this suits all your team. Entry will be £3 and I will keep a running total of match fees that we can sort out in the future. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team.
See below a picture of the Ladies from Summer 2019 – check out all the lovely hair-dos and no social distancing – happy days!
Ladies Section – Captains Update June 2020
I do hope everyone is well now we have been released from Lockdown and can get back on the Course. I am pleased to welcome two new ladies, Gill Buck and Lucy Hamerton.
Over the last few months I have created a new Ladies Section on the Club website where we can post information, including newsletters, competition details, meeting notes and photos. If you have any useful information or photos you would like to share on the website please send details to me, email@example.com
It is wonderful that we can now play four balls and have access to the course for most of the day; this should continue until September when the College is expected to reopen. It would be great if we could start booking Wednesday morning tee times so we can see each other for a roll up, although observing the socially distanced rules.
If you would like any Club jumpers, costing £20 or tee shirts at £16, do let me know.
To get us in a more competitive mindset I am organising a 9 hole Stableford Corona Competition; please let me know if you would like to enter by 12 June by emailing me firstname.lastname@example.org with your handicap and I will post the draw on the Website. There will be no entrance fee but prizes will be awarded for the best three scores. If anyone else has ideas for competitions that they would like to organise please let me know.
In the light of the disruption to the programme of events planned for 2020, it has been agreed that the current Captains should remain in post until 2021, so you are stuck with me for quite awhile. Please bear with me as I am so new to the world of golf. Thankfully Alison Aldred has also agreed to stand as Vice Captain for the extended period.
Happy golfing – hope to see you on the course in the near future.
